DESCRIPTION:PROGRAM COURSE\, PHD IN DATA SCIENCE25-29 September 2023 Speake
r: Vangelis Markakis (University of Athens)\, Ivan Visconti (University of
Salerno)\, Andrea Vitaletti (Sapienza University of Rome)\, Philip Lazos
(Input Output IOG\, United Kingdom) Title: Crypto and Incentive-based Mech
anisms for Blockchain Technology3CFU Abstract:1st part) The Blockchain Era
started with the cryptocurrency Bitcoin that Nakamoto designed by crucial
ly and cleverly using digital signatures and cryptographic hash functions.
Nowadays mainstream blockchains and their applications strongly rely on m
ore advanced cryptographic tools that in the past were considered of theor
etical interest only. The goal of this course is to overview the various c
ryptographic notions that have played a key-role for the success of blockc
hains and their applications. 2nd part) The purpose of these lectures is t
o provide an overview of game-theoretic and economic aspects that arise in
the design and analysis of blockchain protocols. To this end\, we will pr
esent recent research that has been carried out on the following selected
list of topics: 1) design and analysis of reward sharing schemes in Proof
of Stake protocols\, where the goal is to decide how to split rewards from
block production to the players 2) governance in blockchain systems\, con
cerning the design of voting rules for decision making in decentralized au
tonomous organizations\, 3) transaction fee mechanism design\, which conce
rns the design of appropriate policies for congestion control\, 4) tokenom
ics\, involving economic policies for the supply and distribution of token
s in a cryptocurrency system\, and 5) stable coins\, where the goal is to
design cryptocurrencies that can be pegged to a real reserve asset\, such
as fiat currency.  Zoom Link: https://uniroma1.zoom.us/j/97776722075?pwd=d

rned a Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from SAPIENZA University of Rome in 2
 002. During his Ph.D. and in the following years he visited some renowned
international research centers such as ETHZ (CH) and AT&T Research Labs (U
SA). He is currently Associate professor  in networking and algorithmic to
pics  at (DIAG) Dipartimento di Ingegneria informatica automatica e gestio
nale Antonio Ruberti University of Rome 'La Sapienza'. He has (co-)authore
d more than 60 papers in journals and international conferences (h-index 2
6 in Google Scholar)\, mainly in the area of algorithms and protocols for
wireless and sensor networks and IoT. His current research interests conce
rn the design and the analysis of efficient IoT solutions as well as block
chain technologies. He has been reviewer for several international confere
nces and journals and PC  member of some international conferences. He has
been involved in several EU projects as researcher and PI\, and he coordi
nated the FET OPEN project Pleased.  He has been member of the Steering Bo
ard of ARTEMISIA from 2010 to 2013. He has carried out applied industrial
research on wireless and pervasive systems at NTT DATA labs (formely known
as ETNOTEAM ltd)   for 9 years. In 2002 e founded the SME WLAB where he w
as the CTO up to 2016. In 2012 he founded WSENSE a spin-off of the Univeri
ty of Rome 'La Sapienza' where he was the CTO up to 2019. The effectivenes
s of his applied research activity is witnessed by 2 patents and 4 patent
applications and by some awards: Winner of media and communication categor
y at Wonderland Contest 2000\, Innovation Prize at Simagine 2002\, Bronze
Award at Simagine 2004 and Third place award in the Start Cup Roma 2006/20
07 and winner of Italiacamp 2012. He leads e research group of 2 Ph.D stud
ents\, 1 post Doc  and 5 master students in the Wireless Sensor Networks l
