DESCRIPTION: Abstract:With the advent of Industry 4.0\, digital representat
ions of products and manufacturing systems have been considered central fo
r optimizing their development\, production\, and delivery phases. Digital
twins are not simply conceived as simulation models of their physical cou
nterpart\, differently they are developed as means for better understandin
g and control of the real system. To keep alignment with physical systems
along their whole lifecycle\, digital twins need automation for synchroniz
ation and model updates. Different data-driven approaches will be explored
for model generation of process flows and equipment from different data v
iews. The advantages and disadvantages of these approaches will be discuss
ed to provide a comprehensive understanding. Additionally\, techniques for
online validation and synchronization of digital twins will be presented\
, ensuring that the digital twin accurately reflects the physical system i
n real time. Applications in manufacturing and circular economies will be
described\, showcasing their potential to optimize production processes\,
reduce waste\, and enhance sustainability. Bio:Andrea Matta is Full Profes
sor of Manufacturing and Production Systems at Department of Mechanical En
gineering of Politecnico di Milano. He graduated in Industrial Engineering
at Politecnico di Milano where he develops his teaching and research acti
vities since 1998. He was Distinguished Professor at the School of Mechani
cal Engineering of Shanghai Jiao Tong University from 2014 to 2016 and Gue
st Professor between 2017-2019. He has been visiting professor at Ecole Ce
ntrale Paris (France)\, University of California at Berkeley (USA)\, and T
ongji University (China). His research area includes analysis\, design and
management of manufacturing and health care systems. He is Editor in Chie
f of Flexible Services and Manufacturing Journal since 2017\, past member
of editorial board of OR Spectrum journal and IEEE Robotics and Automation
Letters journal. He was Chair of the technical committee IEE RAS Sustaina
ble Production Automation. He is member of scientific committee in several
international conferences. Member of the Steering Committee of PhD on Mec
hanical Engineering. Member of the ADA University Advisory Board. He was a
warded with the Shanghai One Thousand Talent and Eastern Scholar in 2013.
