DESCRIPTION:In this line of work\, we look at left-vs.-right polarization i
n web search queries issued and hashtags being used. This is joint work wi
th Erik Borra (U. of Amsterdam)\, Venkata Rama Kiran Garimella (Yahoo! Res
earch) and Asmelash Kiran (L3S).In the first part\, I'll look at queries i
ssued to Yahoo! in the US. Apolitical leaning is assigned to queries in re
lation to the resultsbeing clicked. E.g. a query for which predominantly T
he HuffingtonPost (a left-leaning site) would be labeled as left-leaning a
nd asimilar for queries landing on The Drudge Report (a right-leaningsite)
. This leaning information is then augmented with informationabout query p
opularity\, query sentiment and even factual accuracy ofcontroversies rela
ted to the query. We show that our methodology canbe used to gain insights
into how issues are 'framed' by either sideand present both expected and
surprising results linking truth values\,leaning and popularity. A related
demo can be publicly accessed at:http://politicalsearchtrends.sandbox.yah
oo.com/In the second part\, we look at hashtag usage of US Twitter users i
n apolitical context. Starting from a set of seed users (e.g.\,@BarackObam
a on the left and @MittRomney on the right) we use retweetbehavior to iden
tify users of a particular party affiliation. Lookingat who uses a particu
lar hashtag\, we then assign a leaning to it andalso track changes in this
leaning over time. Focusing on suddenchanges in leaning\, we identify a s
et of 'hashtag hijackers' whoactively engage in hashtag wars to redefine t
he terminology being usedand to bring a hashtag 'over to their side'. A re
lated demo can bepublicly accessed at:http://politicalhashtagtrends.sandbo
x.yahoo.com/Finally\, I'll briefly present results for the UK where politi
cs arenot 1-dimensional. I'd also like to discuss ideas of how to extendsu
ch an analysis to Arab Politics and will show preliminary resultsfor a 'Is
lamist vs. Secular' analysis for Egypt.
